Cal State Long Beach volleyball standout Geoff Cryst will be playing his final games for the 49ers in the upcoming Big West championship playoffs.
Cryst, 22, a native of Tonawanda, New York, came to CSULB four years ago after turning down an academic and sports scholarship from Ball State University in Indiana.
His decision was based on the superior talent level of Big West volleyball and the opportunities that come with playing volleyball in California.
Cryst hopes to leave after a good showing at the upcoming championship playoffs which the 49ers can host with a win in their final game against USC.
"With hard practice and good work, we can control our destiny going into these games." Cryst said.
As for the teams future state without Cryst and two other departing seniors, Cryst is optimistic. He says the team is supported by pride from the past and present.
Talent or no talent, the 49ers always preserve to win by united determination and a grand desire for victory.
"I'm confident that the team will find a way to win. The next team has a lot of good, young players to carry on, and of course, I'll be there watching the games," Cryst said.
Cryst said that the main support for the volleyball team comes from coach Ray Ratelle. He gives Ratelle credit for bringing the current volleyball program into existence and keeping it strong.
"Ray has a knack for knowing what the team needs and bringing in the necessary people or plans to get it done. He keeps the program moving forward," Cryst said.
Cryst won't let graduation halt his volleyball playing career. He hopes to try for a position on the World Team.
He would also like to try some other avenues which may include chiropractic training.
As for returning to New York, Cryst's answer is no. He has found a home in the sun and sand of California and does not foresee himself leaving for at least the next 20 years.
