Students in professor Ildiko Choy's display and exhibition class welcome world-renown artist Christo to campus today in the Department of Design Gallery from 1 to 7 p.m. Their class project is an exhibit that will feature Christo's full body of work of approximately 65 graphic illustrations.
The design students have been creating the exhibit for the environmental artist's illustrations for more than two weeks. "We took the opportunity and tremendous challenge to design an exhibit for such a well known and respected artist," Choy said. "The students worked on lthe exhibit after class, nights and weekends."
Christo and wife Jeanne-Claude will give a lecture, "Two Works in Progress: Over the River, Project for the Arkansas River, Colorado and The Gates Project for Central Park, New York City," in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center from 5 to 7 p.m.
Christo is remembered by Californians for his very visible umbrella project in October 1991. For nearly two weeks, thousands witnessed the spectacle of 1,700 yellow umbrellas strewn along 18 miles of the Grapevine on Interstate 5.
Christo's sister project in Japan was also underway at the same time with 1,300 blue umbrellas covering a 12 mile stretch of Japanese soil.
Admission to both the Design Gallery and lecture is free.
