Students win nine awards

Cal State Long Beach won nine journalism awards over the weekend at the 48th annual California Intercollegiate Press Association held in San Luis Obispo.

For the mail-in segment of the competition, University Magazine won six of the awards, the Daily Forty-Niner won one. The remaining two awards came from on-site contests. All mail-in submissions came from last year's publications. University Magazine placed in all six competitions it entered.

The winners for photography were Amy Beth Bennett, third place for on-site feature photo; Rich Doherty, second place for best sports photograph; John Kennedy, second place for best magazine color photograph and second place for best magazine black and white photograph.

The winners for writing were Rodd Cayton, second place for best on-site sports story; Derek Sullivan, third place for best human interest story in a magazine; and Sharon Hansen, second place for best news article in a magazine.

University Magazine won third place for best cover and second place for general excellence.

In related news, Dr. William Mulligan, publisher of The Daily Forty-Niner, was elected chief executive office officer of the California Journalism Conference, which oversees CIPA.
