University Police booked 24-year-old Armando Gutierrez into Long Beach City Jail Monday on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, Cal State Long Beach Investigator John Bellah said.

The arrest follows the March 11 assault of a CSULB student in the College of Business Administration Building. University Police would not identify the victim.

Gutierrez is scheduled to be arraigned today at Long Beach Municipal Court. Although University Police obtained an arrest warrant for Gutierrez after the assault, University Police were not able to arrest the suspect because he fled to El Paso, Texas.

University Police attempted to arrest Gutierrez at his place of employment in Santa Ana, which University Police did not identify, on the evening of March 11. But Gutierrez had already fled to El Paso.

Three days after the assault, Gutierrez phoned Bellah from El Paso to inform him that he would be turning himself over to University Police upon his return to Long Beach.

Bellah said he believes Gutierrez may have come to campus to look for his wife, a CSULB student. By chance, Gutierrez happened upon the victim and allegedly assaulted him.

Reports circulated that Gutierrez assaulted the victim because he believed the victim had an extramarital relationship with his wife. Bellah would neither confirm nor deny this report. The assault involved a domestic situation, Bellah said.

Due to the severity of the injuries to his face, the victim underwent plastic surgery at an unspecified Kaiser Permanente Medical Care facility.

Gutierrez wore shoes when he allegedly kicked the victim in the face, Bellah said, explaining the assault with a deadly weapon charge.
