The Cal State Long Beach Foundation is $2 million richer, thanks to a grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The money is to be used to support development of property for CSULB's Research and Training Center.
The facility will be created on a site in west Long Beach, which had been used to house U.S. Navy personnel. Ownership of the property was transferred to the University last summer. The center will be used by CSULB and private industry to develop research and training facilities.
Ultimately, the center will encompass up to 600,000 square feet of developed space, according to the CSULB Office of Public Affairs.
"The Research and Training Center will give CSULB an outstanding opportunity to be a major player in assisting Long Beach [in achieving] its goals in...education and economic growth," University President Robert Maxson said.
"Projections are that this center will provide up to 3,000 jobs when completed and have an annual economic impact of $176 million."
"This grant means we are well on our way to providing a valuable resource for our community,"he said.
