Gauchos cool 49ers

The Long Beach State women's basketball team played their hearts out, but in the end still fell to the No. 12 UCSB Gauchos, 73-63.

"We came out a little bit nervous in the beginning," 49er Head Coach Dallas Boychuck-Bolla said.  "For the first couple of minutes, no one scored, defense was good."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

After beating Cal Poly 69-65 Friday night, LBSU was riding a wave of five consecutive wins. In the victory, Smith finished with 25 points and five blocks. Mustang Jennifer Sorosky tallied 22 points and five rebounds in the loss.

In Sunday's game, UCSB (21-3 overall, 9-0 Big West) came out firing. The combination of speedy point guard Stacy Clinesmith and defending Big West Player of the Year Erin Buescher proved too much for the 49ers. Buescher had 28 points and nine rebounds for the game.  Clinesmith scored 13 points, which included her going 6 for 6 from the free throw line.

The Gauchos were also helped by three busloads of overzealous fans that came to The Pyramid.

Boychuck-Bolla pointed out that the Gauchos went to the charity stripe 29 times, compared to the 49ers (13-8, 7-2) ten attempts, which really hurt them in the end.

At the half, LBSU trailed 31-26. The 49ers shot 30 percent from the field, compared to the UCSB's 42 percent.
The 49ers picked up the intensity in the second half and shot 51 percent, but it proved to be too little, too late for LBSU.

"It was a really good game, but at the end, we needed to stay focused," said LBSU center Rhonda Smith.
"We had three turnovers in our last three possessions. We need to play harder, execute more, and have less turnovers," Smith said.

Smith was 12 for 15 from the field and finished up the game with 26 points, five rebounds, and two blocks.

"I think we need to get the ball into Rhonda more," Boychuck-Bolla said.  "They really can't guard her inside.  We needed to take care of the ball a little more."

49er guard Reta Sula chipped in with ten points and five rebounds.

On Thursday the 49ers will head to Cal Poly. The Mustangs will be looking for revenge when the 49ers will be on their turf.

Then the 49ers will have another stab at the Gauchos when the team travels to The Thunderdome on the campus of UCSB Sunday

"We still need to go with the same game plan, we're gonna do the same things," Boychuck-Bolla said.  "We do need to do a better job on Buescher though."
"We'll be ready for them next week," Smith guaranteed.
