Men's volleyball steps on slugs; women's b-ball

Playing against a Division III opponent
gave Long Beach State men's volleyball Coach Ray Ratelle the opportunity
to let everyone in on the fun Friday night.
In a game that lasted a little more than
an hour, 745 people in The Pyramid saw LBSU beat UC Santa Cruz in three
games, 15-1, 15-5, and 15-2.
"It's great to see a lot of people get
work," Ratelle said after the game. "The entire team played well."
Ratelle also explained after the game why
he scheduled a game against the Division III Banana Slugs, "I promised
to play them since last year," Ratelle said.
The 49ers (4-1) were lead by Jim Polster
with 15 kills and played in all three games. As a team the 49ers hit .500
from the court and had 48 kills.
As for the Banana Slugs (1-2) they had
25 kills but committed 26 errors that lead to a hitting percentage of -.013.
Mike Rubin led UCSC with 11 kills.
The 49ers next game will be this Friday
at home against Stanford.
In other sports news, after a slow first
half start, the LBSU women's basketball team came back to defeat Nevada
77-72 Friday night at Reno.
After falling behind by 14 at halftime,
the 49ers clamped down defensively only allowing the Wolf Pack to make
only eight of their 29 second half shots. While the 49ers were shutting
the down the Wolf Pack, LBSU improved to shoot 55.6 percent in the final
half.
The 49ers were lead by Rhonda Smith who
led all scorers with 25 before fouling out. Jackie Moore had a double-double
with ten points and ten rebounds.
The Wolf Pack was led by Kate Smith's double-double
with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
The 49ers improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0
in the Big West Conference. Nevada falls to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in conference
play.
49ers played at New Mexico State on Sunday.
