Long Beach State men's basketball coach
Wayne Morgan can now be compared to Lute Olson in one more aspect, consecutive
victories as 49er coach.
After defeating defending Big West Champion
New Mexico State 78-66 on national television Thursday at The Pyramid,
the 49ers easily disposed of North Texas 100-63 in front of 2,269 delighted
fans at The Pyramid. The last time LBSU (12-3 overall, 4-0 Big West Conference)
won ten in a row, Nixon was president and Olson was coaching the 49ers.
"Lute Olson is a great, great coach," Morgan
said. "If I can be mentioned in the same paragraph as him, that makes me
happy."
Another 49er making their mark in the record
book was Antrone Lee who tied the LBSU career block mark with 110. Lee
ties Ivan Verberckt who played for LBSU from 1982-84. After the game Lee
was unaware of his record tying performance.
"It's not a big deal to me, it is something
I like to do," Lee said.
However the game against North Texas (4-11,
2-2) was more than just ten victories consecutive victories and tying records,
it was the first time LBSU would play without Charles O'Neal who left the
team on Friday. Ron Johnson would lead the 49er attack, which he did for
the first six games of this season.
Johnson responded by having a solid game
with six assists and seven points and career high four steals. When Johnson
was not in then Keith Felton supplied relief with three points and one
assist.
Also coming up big for the 49ers were Mate
Milisa, James Williams and Ramel Lloyd. Milisa lead all scorers with 27
points, Lloyd had 26 and Williams chipped in with 16 and led the team with
seven rebounds.
The Mean Green was only mean for the opening
minute and was never heard from again. After jumping out to a 5-2 lead,
the 49ers took charge and never looked back leading 60-34 at the half.
In fact the combination of Milisa and Lloyd outscored the Mean Green in
the first half 35-34.
North Texas was lead by Chris Davis with
26 points.
The 49ers next game is at home against
Cal Poly on Thursday night as LBSU begin play in the Western Division of
the Big West Conference. |
