A disappointing 15th place out of 18 teams
at the U.S. Intercollegiate Saturday at Stanford University was not what
the Long Beach State men's golf team had hoped for.
"Everybody was very mediocre," said Head
Coach Bob Livingstone. "You have one bad shot here and there and it just
adds up."
LBSU shot a total of 899, while UC Berkeley
finished in first place with a score of 855. Senior Steve Mena shot the
lowest score (220) for the 49ers, but unfortunately, because he was golfing
as an individual, his rounds were not counted in the team score.
Junior John Mallinger shot a 224, good
for 41st place individually, and four other 49ers, senior Jason Beach,
junior Perry Dickey, junior Brian Merrick and junior Kevin Wurtz, all shot
228 to tie for 58th place.
Despite the poor finish at Stanford, LBSU
will still be advancing to the NCAA West Regionals in Fresno on May 18-20.
"We did get the spot, but it won't be official
until this afternoon," Livingstone explained. |
