The Society of Automotive Engineers at Long Beach State took sixth place out of the 80 buggies at the Mini Baja competition, an off-road buggy competition held in Kansas.

This is the fourth year the LBSU team has competed in the Mini Baja.

Last year  LBSU came in 35th out of  65 teams from the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

With the experience gained from last year's competition and a completely redesigned buggy, the team was No. 1 out of the California universities that competed.

LBSU beat out schools like Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly University, UCLA, UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount.

The closest California university was Cal State University Chico in 23rd place.

The competition involves the presentation of the buggy, its acceleration, maneuverability, endurance, tested by how many laps it can run in a four hour time period, its ability to climb a very steep hill from a dead stop, safety, design and cost analysis reports.
