LBSU coming together

After a stellar fifth-place performance at the Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz Tuesday, the Long Beach State men's golf team is back in regional playoff contention.

"It was one of the better tournaments we've had since I've been here," said Head Coach Bob Livingstone.

The players seemed to click at the right time, Livingstone explained.

"We beat a lot of nationally ranked teams and it shows that we can play with the best of them," said golfer Brian Merrick. "As far as regionals go, we can make it, no doubt."

There were three 49ers in the top 25 individually: John Mallinger, Merrick, and Kevin Wurtz.

"Everyone played consistently well," Wurtz said. "It was perfect timing. Hype was up and we came through."

The players will have a couple of days rest as reward for their hard work, Livingstone said. The team has a three-week break before the Big West Championships in Sacramento.

"Everything that we've been working on is finally coming together," Livingstone said. "We'd have to throw up all over ourselves to not make the playoffs."
