Student vetoes Sexton's budget plan
After reading Thursday's article in The Daily
Forty-Niner about Associated Students Inc. President Toby Sexton's plans
to veto the budget for the 2000-2001 academic year, and the A.S.I. Senate's
denial of La Raza's request for funding, I am outraged.
As a student of this university who is
active in numerous organizations, I think that La Raza's tardiness in filing
for funding will penalize all organizations.
Toby Sexton's excuse for La Raza members
missing deadline due to working full time attending school full time is
nothing but an excuse. I found the time in my busy schedule to file for
funding for my organization.
If the Senate doesn't get a two-thirds
majority to override the veto, all organizations on this campus that filed
for funding on time will suffer, along with La Raza. I understand that
Sexton empathizes with La Raza's inability to meet funding deadlines.
However, if Sexton vetoes the proposed
budget, he will be discrediting all the hard work of the Senator and treasurer
who put together this budget, as well as all the organizations who took
time out of their busy schedules to file for funding.
In addition, most organizations that receive
monies from A.S.I. will now have to present their budget again if Sexton's
veto goes through.
I don't think this is fair at all to the
students of this campus, especially not to those who belong to these organizations.
