Two men in a dark-colored car assaulted
at least five women Sunday evening by spraying a water-like substance into
their faces, University Police said.
The victims told police two young men in
a "station-wagon type vehicle" approached them asking for directions, but
sprayed them "with an unknown water-based substance" instead, said Lt.
Stan Skipworth.
One of the victims, a Cal State Long Beach
student, described her attackers as "college-age" and the car as an "old
model gray Volvo station wagon."
"They pulled up like they're going to
ask for directions, and then they spray you," said the victim who asked
to remain anonymous. "They sprayed for like ten seconds."
What the suspects used to spray the substance
is still unknown, Skipworth said. No one was injured.
The student said she was sprayed while
walking with two friends along Earl Warren Drive. Although the foam-like
substance made her cough and itch, she did not need to go to the hospital,
she said.
The suspects could be charged with assault
and battery, even though the incident was "akin to a water balloon fight,"
Skipworth said.
The incident occurred on at least two separate
occasions between 6:20 and 6:25 p.m., with the first being on the 1300
block of Palo Verde Avenue.
Two more victims were assaulted on the
1500 block of Earl Warren Drive.
Freshman Chris Langan said he has heard
of similar incidents.
"I knew of a friend in high school who
would take an old empty fire extinguisher and fill it with water," Langan
said. "They would go around and spray people with itÖI guess it could shoot
pretty far." |
