Sandler to visit campus

Going to The Pyramid could land you a spot on the big screen.

Actor and comedian Adam Sandler will be at Cal State Long Beach on Feb. 15-18 to film a scene from his upcoming movie, "Little Nicky."

"[CSULB] had the location we needed," said Wendy Laski, Sandler's publicist.

Extras are needed to be in the basketball scene, which features the Harlem Globetrotters.

In the New Line Cinema film, set to be released in November, Sandler plays the devil's son who doesn't want to take over the family business.

The film also stars Harvey Keitel, Patricia Arquette, Rodney Dangerfield and Tiny Lister.

"I think there are two or three benefits to the event," said CSULB President Robert Maxson. "I think it obviously brings in revenue to the university."

When the structure is rented, "the money goes back to the upkeep of The Pyramid," Maxson said, such as improvements and more seats.

Also, the event "provides publicity for the university and brings visibility to the campus," Maxson said.

The on-campus filming also provides another benefit providing "an opportunity for students to be extras. They can in some way be a part of what's going on there," he said.

CSULB clubs and organizations can attend the filming.

Audience Associates, a charity group, will donate $10 per person for groups of 25 people or more, said Angelique Hanuf, the charity's spokeswoman. For groups of 40 people or more, a bus will be provided to take them to and from the set.

"The more people the better," she said.

The Pyramid has been featured in such films and commercials as Space Jam, Starship Troopers and Burger King commercials, Maxson said.

"The inside makes it perfect for space-type films," Maxson said. "The Pyramid is more than a building, it's a symbol, an attitude. It represents what the university is all about."

On New Year's Eve, CNN International showed important places of the millennium, he said. It showed the pyramids of Egypt, and then it  showed The Pyramid at CSULB.

"It sounds fun," said Penny Bounevongsay, a health science major. "It's an opportunity the campus doesn't offer much. I think he's [Sandler] a cool guy."

"He's funny," said Devon Caringella, a health science major. "I would go if I didn't have to work."
Sandler has starred in such films as "Big Daddy," "The Waterboy," and "Happy Gilmore."

The filming will take place from 3 to 11 p.m.
