2 busted for car burglary

Two men were arrested last week after University Police officers discovered them breaking into a student's vehicle in Lot 14, and then discovered evidence in their vehicle possibly linking them to another recent campus vehicle burglary.

The suspects, 19-year-old Richard Fields of Culver City and 18-year-old Jalon Carwell of Los Angeles, were arrested at the scene and taken to the Long Beach Police Department's City Jail downtown for the felony violations.

At about 2:50 a.m. Jan.15, officers received a telephone call regarding a possible burglary in progress, said Lt. Stan Skipworth, a University Police spokesman.

"Officers arrived in less than one minute and found them in the [victim's] vehicle," Skipworth said.

The victim's window had been smashed to gain entry, Skipworth said.

"Pursuant to the arrest, while doing an inventory on the [suspects'] vehicle, officers located several [stolen] items," Skipworth said.

University detectives are looking into whether the two suspects are involved in any other vehicle burglaries that occurred recently on campus.

"At this time, we don't know for sure…but I can't rule anything out," Skipworth said.

Lot 14, the scene of this incident, is where the majority of auto thefts and burglaries occur, University Police said in November.

In a separate incident, a 1992 Honda Civic was stolen out of Lot 1 between 1 and 5 p.m. Tuesday. The estimated loss is $6,000.

The incident comes two months after a rash of auto burglaries and thefts alarmed University Police.
Since then, the police have increased parking patrol and asked the campus community to report suspicious behavior in parking lots.
Honda Civics are the vehicles most commonly stolen on campus, according to University Police.
