Carpooling program eases congestion

Kelly Kirby discovered the joys of bike
riding after encountering the parking congestion on campus.
"I love it," said the Cal State Long Beach
sophomore. "It's so much easier to ride your bike to school than trying
to find a parking spot and then walking forever."
Although she intends to ride her bike as
much as she can, sometimes that may not be possible.
"I wouldn't ride my bike in the rain,"
Kirby said. "Or at night."
For those not wanting to scoot to school
on their bikes, CSULB offers students a carpool program, which provides
them with parking closer to campus.
With approximately 1,200 to 1,300 participants
last semester, this program is easy to take advantage of, according to
Sal Fanua, front counter supervisor of Parking and Transportation Services.
"If you and a friend have a class at the
same time and you live nearby, you should carpool," said Kirby, who participated
in the program last semester with two classmates. "It cuts down on some
time and opens a few parking spaces up in the regular lots."
Students who want to sign up must come
to the parking office and fill out a form. At least one student must have
a regular parking permit. The group of students participating in the carpool
will be issued one carpool permit allowing them to park in lots 11 and
17, Fanua said.
On the other hand, those wanting to prowl
the parking lots for an empty space can obtain a parking permit through
either Parking and Transportation Services or at the University Cashier's
Office for $63.
With this permit, students may park in
lots 1, 3, 11 through 14, 16, 18 through 20 and the Parking Structure as
outlined in the schedule of classes.
If a student receives a ticket and wishes
to protest it, he or she should go to the parking office and fill out an
Administrative Review stating his or her complaint. It should take 10 working
days for students to receive an answer, Fanua said.
