Man arrested for killing L.B. officer
Staff and wire reports
Police arrested a man Tuesday in connection
with the weekend killing of a Long Beach gang-detail officer and the wounding
of another policeman and a pregnant woman, investigators said.
A special weapons team swooped into a Compton
neighborhood at dawn, said David Marander, spokesman for the Long Beach
Police Department. One man was arrested and two were detained for questioning.
"The suspect is still being talked to by
detectives," Marander said late Tuesday afternoon. "He was taken into custody
without incident at 5 a.m. [Tuesday] morning."
Officer Daryle Black, 33, and his partner,
officer Rick Delfin, were shot Saturday while in an unmarked police car.
Black died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Delfin, 41, was in good condition Tuesday
with a leg wound.
A pregnant woman injured by a stray bullet
that entered her home was also in good condition and the fetus was not
harmed.
After homicide detectives received information,
a S.W.A.T. team surrounded a Compton home.
One man was arrested without incident,
Marander said, adding the man would be booked for investigation of murder.
The name of the man was withheld.
A man and woman, whose names were also
withheld, were being questioned.
A search of the home was conducted throughout
the morning.
Details would be released at a later news
conference, Marander said.
The police announced Monday it was offering
a $20,000 reward for information. It wasn't known if the information received
by homicide detectives today was a result of that offer.
''We think it's important that we get these
guys into custody as soon as possible because of the fact that they're
absolutely dangerous,'' Sgt. Steve Filippini said Monday. ''If they would
do this to a police officer, what would they do to a regular citizen?''
Gov. Gray Davis ordered the flag above
the state capitol flown at half-staff Monday to honor Black.
A six-year veteran of the force, Black
was the first Long Beach police officer killed in the line of duty in 25
years.
A public memorial service to honor him
is scheduled for May 4 at the Long Beach Convention Center. |
