Long Beach State team capsules for 1999-2000

  • Baseball -- 31-25 overall, 18-12 Big West Conference, finished in a three-way tie with UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.

  •  

     

    Did not qualify for NCAA regional tournament for the first time since 1990. Bobby Crosby led the team in homeruns with 10 and Jeff Jones lead the team with a .369 batting average. Relief pitcher Josh Alliston led the team with a 2.56 ERA.
     

  • Men's Basketball -- 24-6 overall, 15-1 Big West Conference. Lost to UC California in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament.

  •  

     

    The 49ers won 24 games for the first time since 1973-74 season when Lute Olson was Head Coach. Center Mate Milisa was named Big West Conference Player of the Year.
     

  • Women's Basketball -- 22-11 overall, 12-3 Big West Conference. Lost to Colorado State in the third round of the NIT.

  •  

     

    Center Rhonda Smith help lead the 49ers to the post season for the first time since 1992. Smith scored 21.1 points a game and 111 blocks. Guard Reta Sula set two season records by making 64 3-point goals and shooting .438 from behind the 3-point line.
     

  • Cross Country -- Men's team finished sixth at the Big West Championship. Women's team finished ninth at the Big West Championship.

  •  

     

    Johann Appell and Larry Henderson were the top runners for the LBSU men's team as they both were the top two 49er finishers at meets.  Monica MacManus was the top finisher for the women's team at each meet.
     

  • Golf -- Men's team finished 22nd at the NCAA West Regional. Women's team finished third at the Big West Championship.

  •  

     

    John Mallinger was the 49ers leading scorer at six of the 13 golf tournaments for the men. Carla Legaspi and Shelbie Jasper were the top two performers for the women's team as they each lead the 49ers in scoring at each tournament.
     

  • Soccer -- 7-13 overall, 4-5 Big West Conference.

  • Leading scorer for the 49ers was Jennifer Reott with 9 points and 4 goals.
     
  • Softball -- 39-23 overall, 17-7 Big West Conference. Lost to UCLA in the NCAA Sub-regional.

  •  

     

    Kristi Fox was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year as she went 24-10 with a 1.14 ERA. Outfielder Jessica Smith hit 13 homeruns setting team records for season and career totals.
     

  • Tennis -- 11-12 overall, 3-4 Big West Conference.  Lost to UC Irvine in the second round of the Big West Conference Championships.

  •  

     

    Mandy Carvalho and Sophie Han led the team. Carvalho had a 14-9 record with a 13-7 record as the No. 1 player. Han went 15-8. When teamed together in doubles they had a 13-6 record.
     

  • Track and Field -- Men's team finished seventh at the Big West Championship. Women's team finished eight at the Big West Championship.

  •  

     

    Henderson finished first in the 1,500 meter run. Tayyiba Haneef placed first in the women's high jump with a mark of 6 feet 1 1/4 inches.
     

  • Men's Volleyball -- 23-5 overall, 16-3 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Lost to Loyola Marymount in the first round of the MSPF tournament.

  •  

     

    The 49ers raced out with a 20-2 record and a No. 1 ranking in Head Coach Ray Ratelle's final season. Chris Seiffert lead the 49ers in assists with 1,452 and David McKienzie led the team with 552 kills.
     

  • Women's Volleyball -- 31-4 overall, 14-2 Big West Conference. Lost to Stanford in National Semifinal.

  •  

     

    Cheryl Weaver led the 49ers with 517 kills and tied with Haneef with the team lead with 144 blocks. Setter Keri Nishimoto set a new school record with 14.58 assists a game.
     

  • Men's Water Polo -- 13-14 overall, 3-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Finished seventh in the MPSF tournament.

  •  

     

    Chris Segesman, Corey Dolley and Partick Cochran each scored 50 points for the 49ers. Goalie Robert Smith made 223 saves on the year.
     

  • Women's Water Polo -- 18-22 overall, 2-7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Finished 12th at the Collegiate Nationals held at Indianapolis.

  •  

     

    Stacy Black lead the 49ers with 76 goals and goalie Candice Chick lead the team with 209 saves.
