Daily Forty-Niner

Mark Turner's recent release, "Ballad Session," is a melodic mix of sensual tunes and relaxing moments.  Valentine's Day romantics would benefit by having this album in their collection.

"Ballad Session" is guaranteed to assist in the wooing of a Valentine hopeful.

CD REVIEW: B-

Turner, a master of the tenor saxophone, is musically complimented by Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Kevin Hays on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass and Brian Blade on drums.

In a series of quartets, quintets and single trio the album offers a variety of tracks.

Turner's musical influences range from John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins to Dexter Gordon and Dinah Washington, According to a Warner Brothers press release.

These powerful musical influences shine through his album.   The first track, "I love you Porgy," is a tribute to the musical "Porgy and Bess" with some of Turner's own musical alterations.

"Ballad Session" only continues to get better with "Nefertiti," "Skylark" and "Visions." Turner goes on spicing up "All or Nothing at All," a hit by jazz great John Coltrane.

Although this album is great to listen to with a loved one, it simply picks up where other jazz greats left off.

Despite the new spins added to many of the album's tracks, jazz fans leaning toward the upbeat variety might find "Ballad Session" too mellow.

However, if romance is your cup of tea, this is the album for you. "Ballad Session" is sure to ignite sparks between lovers.
