Punk band Unwritten Law to block out Sun

Unwritten Law is playing the Sun Theatre
in Anaheim this Sunday. No, that is not a misprint.
The same venue that has played host to
Bob Dylan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Nicks and Sammy Hagar will be featuring
the five-piece punk rock band from San Diego on its stage this weekend.
This is the same band that has toured with
the famed punk/hardcore/alternative festival, the Warped Tour sharing the
stage with such punk legends as NOFX, the Descendants and Pennywise.
However out of the ordinary this may seem,
it will take place.
With all the punk rock bands coming out
of Southern California in the last five years, it would be all too easy
to dismiss Unwritten Law as just another face in an ever-growing crowd.
They have found a way to stand out from
the rest of the pack for one reason. They remember to rock.
Bands like Blink-182 seem to have forgotten
how to do this, coming off as just another meaningless pop band with a
drummer who plays at breakneck speeds.
While Unwritten Law still makes ample use
of catchy harmony vocals in their songs, they remain committed to providing
music with a harder edge and more credibility than the cheesy pop-punk
bands that have become so trendy in recent years.
While comparisons to Bad Religion and Pennywise
are not entirely unfounded, the band, formed in 1994, has gained a lot
of acceptance on their own merits behind songs such as "Superman," "Suzanne"
and "Cailin."
The sheer intensity and emotion in their
songs have made the band one of the more impressive live acts in the punk
scene.
Since the band hails from not-so-distant
San Diego, they have built up a sizable fan base in the Orange County area.
These die-hards, in addition to their increase
in airplay on KROQ, have made this show highly anticipated by fans.
The show will be the band's second of two
stops in Southern California on their current West Coast mini-tour (the
other being the night before at the Ventura Theatre).
Following the tour the band will head back
to the studio to record their fourth album, the follow-up to their highly
successful, self-titled Interscope debut.
Rap-funk-rock group Dial-7, who also has
a new album in the works, will be opening. |
