Plenty of excitement for students at The Beach

Welcome to The Beach!

For those of you joining our campus community for the first time, I wish to congratulate you for selecting Long Beach State as your university.

This is a campus of about 30,000. It is exciting and I know you are going to love it here.

I am proud to serve as your president. The months and years since I arrived in June 1994 have gone by quickly, yet joyously for me.

During my daily walks around the campus, I would enjoy it if you would take a moment to introduce yourself to me.

I hope all of you had a great summer and are looking forward to the new academic year. Within a very short time, you will see and feel the energy and excitement not only as friendships are renewed, but as new friendships begin.

I hope that you are as thrilled as I am about making new acquaintances and getting to know the wonderful members of your university family.

The staff and faculty have been busy during the summer months preparing for the opening weeks of the academic year so we can continue to provide an enriching learning environment that will allow you to attain your educational and personal goals.

I am tremendously optimistic about the future of campus life at Long Beach State. Last week, we received a respectable increase in our budget from the governor and legislature, which will fund a number of student programs.

During your free time I hope that you will actively seek the numerous opportunities to enjoy campus life.

Not only are there a number of athletic events scheduled each week, there are also dance, music and theatre performances planned throughout the academic year.

I would also encourage you to participate in a variety of wonderful activities scheduled throughout the year in your newly renovated University Student Union.

I would like to congratulate the outstanding staff of the Daily Forty-Niner for receiving the prestigious state award for its news coverage and editorial excellence. Way to go guys!
