Teachers' contract extended

The California State University System and the California Faculty Association agreed Monday to extend the existing teachers' contract while negotiations continue, said Hamdi Bilici, president of the CFA.

"We agreed on extending all articles of the contract except those dealing with merit pay," he said.

Bilici said the contract extension is necessary in case of staff grievances and arbitration.

The mood is more conciliatory on both sides, andBilici said he is optimistic that a resolution will be reached soon.

CSU media relations manager Ken Swisher said it is unlikely this week's negotiations will result in an agreement that can be presented to the CSU board at its Sept. 15 meeting.
