One of Cal State Long Beach's faculty members has been recognized for his outstanding work as an advisor and event coordinator.

Brett Waterfield was nominated by members of the executive board of the Western region of the National Pan-Hellenic Council for his outstanding work on campus and the campus community.

The NPHC was founded in 1930 at Howard University and is an organization made up of the nine African-American Greek letter groups.

Waterfield was named NPHC Outstanding University Advisor for the Western Region at its biannual conference in San Jose. The award recognizes leadership, outstanding campus programming and service to the region, which covers 13 states.

Waterfield has worked with African-American Greek organizations in the areas of chapter development and leadership. He was recognized for bringing eight leaders from the African-American Greek organizations from CSULB to the Western Regional Greek Conference in San Francisco. This was the first time leaders from CSULB were able to attend the conference.

Waterfield has also hosted a day-long conference in the summer with four other advisors. The conference was considered a workshop to hone leadership skills.

Waterfield is a coordinator in the Office of Student Life and Development at CSULB and he plans and organizes campus events and programs.

Waterfield graduated from CSULB in 1987 and received his bachelor's of science degree in criminal justice. When he was a student here, he did not participate in Greek life but enjoys working with the leaders in the African-American Greek system.

Waterfield is a Long Beach resident and began working at CSULB in 1992. He is a graduate student in the psychology department and will complete his master's of science degree in December.
