The Long Beach State women's tennis team was able to hold its own in the singles and doubles categories during the first few rounds of the ITA Regional Tournament hosted by UC Irvine on Nov. 11-15.
However, The Beach was unable to come up with the win in the end.
The Beach had seven players entered in the singles bracket and three teams entered in the doubles bracket.
Due to rain, eight-game pro set scoring was used in the first round of the qualifying draw in singles play.
After the first round of play had finished, LBSU's Allison Arvizu, Dianne Asis and Connie Burggraf went on to compete in the second round of the qualifying draw.
Arvizu and Burggraf defeated their opponents and were able to advance to the first round of the main draw. Jessica Perico did not have to compete in the qualifying draw to participate in the main draw because of her higher ranking.
Regardless of her ranking, Perico lost to USC's Krissy Hamilton in two games (6-0, 6-0).
Arvizu was defeated by Katy Propstra from Arizona State in two games (6-3, 6-2).
Burggraf was not able to advance past the first round either losing to Julie Chidley from San Diego State in two games (6-2, 6-2).
Two of The Beach's doubles teams advanced past the first round of the main draw.
Allison Arvizu and Dianne Asis served up a score of 8-3 to defeat Jackie Jocson and Annie Lippmann from UC Santa Barbara. Connie Burggraf and Lara Spica advanced over Aylan Algan and Darcy Down from UC Irvine with a score of 8-4.
Neither of The Beach's doubles teams were able to keep up their momentum and both lost in the second round of the main draw. Arvizu and Asis were defeated by Jacqui Boyd and Krissy Hamilton from USC with a score of 8-4, and Burggraf and Spica were eliminated by Susie Kocsis and Marcella Valkenhoff from the University of Las Vegas 8-1.
Ditta Huber from USC won the title in singles play, while Annica Cooper and Amanda Dasica out of UCLA took the crown in doubles competition.
The team will not resume play until Jan. 24 when it faces Northern Arizona
University at the 49er Courts in an 11 a.m. contest.
