The respect he feels for education and for the professors who taught him how to be a success are the reasons California State University trustee Stanley Wang donated $1 million to the CSU system.
Wang's donation, the largest ever given by an individual to the CSU system, will be used to recognize CSU faculty and administrators for outstanding achievements and accomplishments.
The Stanley Wang Recognition awards of $20,000 each will be presented annually, over a 10-year period, to one administrator and four faculty members.
Wang - a CSU trustee since 1994 - said in a press release that the shrinking world makes education today more important than ever.
"The interdependence of the global economy requires greater knowledge and understanding between the West and the East," Wang said. "I am confident that the faculty will prepare students for the merging West and East economic relationships in the new millennium."
Chancellor Charles B. Reed and Wang will appoint a selection committee of six who will review nominations for the awards.
Annually, one faculty member will be nominated by the campus president from the following four disciplines: visual and performing arts and letters; natural sciences, mathematical and computer sciences and engineering; social and behavioral services and public services; education and the professional applied science fields.
In addition to faculty, one administrator will also be nominated by the chancellor and CSU campus presidents.
Wang is founder, president and executive officer of Pantronix Company in Fremont. The company provides manufacturing services for semiconductor components, sub systems and modules to a global market.
He received his bachelor's degree in business management from the National Taiwan University in 1967 and a master of business administration degree from Temple University in 1970.
The first Stanley Wang Recognition Awards are scheduled to be presented at the May 1999 Board of Trustees' meeting.
