Three students from Cal State Long Beach have been awarded The Long Beach State New York Club Scholarship.
The winners were business majors Kathryn Gainey and Sineth Nguon and art major Susie Lim.
"The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to students who have shown exemplary motivation in pursuing a college degree and are prepared to make a strong contribution to their chosen field of pursuit," said Jeff Klauss, chapter coordinator for CSULB.
The Long Beach State New York Club Scholarship is funded by a chapter of alumni who live in New York.
"They provide three scholarships each year to promote involvement and active participation between CSULB and its family of alumni, parents and friends," Klaus said.
The recipients submitted their applications in May and were notified by mail in August. The scholarships were awarded in New York in October and all expenses for the trip were included in the scholarship package.
"The top businesses are in New York, so it was a great opportunity to meet and network with the great alumni who graduated from Cal State Long Beach and now live in New York," Nguon said.
While in New York, the winners attended dinner with alumni Loita Woods and husband Robert Woods, also known as Bo Buchanan from the soap opera "One Life to Live."
They also visited Wall Street, Central Park, Fifth Avenue and met with alumni Mark Meyer, who is vice president of a trust company, and had lunch with Jo Jo Starbuck.
"The alumni were very nice people and were genuinely interested in us as students, they offered to help us in any way that they could," Nguon said.
"Generous people, they offered me a place to stay if I was ever in town again," Gainey said.
Nguon used her money for a car payment and Gainey will use her money to study abroad in Europe.
Lim, was offered an internship in New York by an alumnus, Gainey said. However, Lim could not be contacted.
The scholarships are given out every year to students in good standing in the College of Business Administration and the College of the Arts.
