CSULB sports, arts among the very best anywhere

 

This weekend, the No. 1-ranked women's volleyball team in America defeated UC Santa Barbara in three games before the largest crowd ever to view an athletic event on campus - 5,200 fans packed The Pyramid, cheering on the team as it improved its record to 24-0 overall.

Also on Saturday, our women's basketball team beat the Long Beach State Alumni team in overtime. Sunday afternoon, our men's water polo team beat Air Force 12-7.

Sunday afternoon, the best and brightest students in the College of the Arts were honored at the Gerald Daniel Recital Hall.

Sunday evening, "West Side Story" was performed before a sold-out audience at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.

And, of course, the play "De Donde," featuring Emi Torres and his fellow actors, continues to thrill crowds at the University Theatre on campus.

You have until this Saturday to catch this tough and thought-provoking play at student discount rates.

If you have the time, you may wish to make a trip to Hollywood on Thursday evening to catch the Eighth Annual Film Festival at the Directors Guild.

The festival showcases the creative and exciting works by our film students.

Also, during the next four weeks, you may want to take some time to visit the University Art Museum, which will have the Faculty Biannual exhibit, featuring works by faculty in the art department.

You might be interested in knowing that our College of the Arts is California's largest publicly funded school for the arts. Our dance department ranks among the Top 10 undergraduate programs in the country and offers the only master's of fine arts and bachelor's of fine arts in the California State University system.

Also, our graphic design program was recognized internationally as one of the Top 10 programs by Visions, a Japanese design magazine.

Speaking of the arts, what do Steven Spielberg, Steve Martin and Chris Carter, creator of "The X-Files," have in common? They all attended Cal State Long Beach.
