With only one tournament left in the fall semester, the Long Beach State men's golf team finished better in the Matador Invitational than in the Fresno Lexus Classic.
Although the team golfed well overall, it finished 12th out of 15 competing schools at a tournament hosted by Fresno State on Friday and Saturday.
Finishing at six-over-par with a score of 150, golfers John Mallinger and Steve Mena led The Beach, each placing 37th out of 95 participants.
Other golfers contributing to The Beach's combined total of 602 were Sean Brocklebank with 154 and Jason Beach with 155.
UC Berkeley placed first in the tournament at five-under-par with a four-player-total of 571 followed by Brigham Young University with 572 and San Diego State with 578.
Even though they finished higher in eighth place at a tournament hosted by Cal State Northridge on Monday and Tuesday, the team members did not play as well as they did in the previous tournament.
Leading The Beach was Mallinger, who placed sixth out of 89 golfers at eight-over-par with a three-round-total of 224.
Contributing to The Beach's final total of 934 were Brian Merrick with a total of 234, Beach with 237 and Mena with 239.
The Top 3 schools in the tournament were: The University of Sacramento with a total of 899, UC Santa Barbara with 903 and Santa Clara University with 909.
The Beach will conclude this semester at the Herb Wimblerly Classic hosted
by New Mexico State on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27.
