After competing in 13 different speech and debate events last weekend, Cal State Long Beach's 1998 Forensic team clinched a second-place overall victory in a tournament held at San Diego State University.
At the end of the three-day event, CSULB amassed 78 sweepstakes points - which put them ahead of Arizona State, Northern Arizona State University, Southwest Texas, USC and the University of Oregon.
The first-place finish went to University of Laverne, which amassed 91 sweepstakes points.
CSULB's second-place victory would not have been possible without outstanding individual and team performances, forensics director Matt Taylor said.
Team member Mercedes Cerrillos was named tournament champion in both Prose Interpretation of Literature and the Junior Division of Parliamentary Debate.
Cerrillos shared the Parliamentary Championship with her partner, David Bodnariuk.
CSULB's Patrick Arrington and Andraya Carson placed third in the novice division parliamentary debate, while Krissy Adamczyk and Jennifer Asenas took fifth place.
Arrington was the tournament champion in Novice Extemporaneous speaking. He and Carson were also finalists in novice impromptu speaking.
