The Long Beach State men's club soccer team pounded USC 2-0 on Saturday, but could not clench its second victory of the weekend as the Golden Bears of UC Berkeley defeated the Beach 3-2 on Sunday.

In Saturday's game against USC, The Beach's offense was unable to score during the first half, but its defense was able to hold the Trojans scoreless thanks in part to fullback Mark Martinez who prevented USC forward striker Daniel Berkoh from scoring.

Berkoh is considered one of the most dangerous strikers in the West region for collegiate club teams.

The Beach's offense came back with a vengeance after the half-time break and scored the first minute into the second half as forward Dan Kolano whipped a header into the far-left goal post off a direct free kick from halfback Brian Perry.

Several minutes later, Long Beach State forward Brian McMahon scored the winning goal when he fired a shot past the Trojan goalie from 18 yards out after receiving a cross ball from halfback Nick Phelps. McMahon managed to dribble the ball past Trojan defenders to score.

Sunday, UC Berkeley scored the first goal of the game five minutes into the first half.

The Beach came back 20 minutes later and scored when Kolano took a shot off a pass from center halfback Danny Arreguin.

The Golden Bears dominated the 49ers with a quick and accurate passing game that helped them score another goal at the end of the first half, and their third goal deep into the second half.

Long Beach State refused to go down without a fight even though a number of players were injured, and scored its second goal during the last few minutes of the game.

The Beach's Juan Rodriguez managed to score off a header from a pass by forward Pablo Pena after he recovered the ball during a scramble in front of the goal.

The Long Beach State men's club soccer team will next be in action this weekend when it faces the San Diego Aztecs this Saturday.

The game will be played on the Athletic field at 10 a.m.
