Runners quietly improve

Facing four of the Top 12 schools in the nation at the Stanford Invitational hosted by Stanford University, the Long Beach State men's and women's cross country teams focused on individual improvements despite their can-do-better performances.

The top team finisher for the men's team, which finished dead last in15th place, was Fred Becerra, who individually finished in 85th place - the only double digit placing for the seven-man squad.

The teams were on par with their season averages, but the presence of such high-ranking schools as Stanford and Brigham Young University messed up the grading curve of an otherwise good performance.

For the women's team, which finished 17th place out of 19 schools, Bree Frigo played "Lone Ranger," finishing with a time of 18:40 and a 59th place ranking, 31 places in front of sidekick Monica MacManus.
