The Long Beach State men's water polo team tied a school record by scoring 24 goals in its 24-3 pounding of tough Occidental College on Friday at the LBSU Campus Pool.

The only other time The Beach scored 24 goals was Sept. 7, 1985, when it defeated Cal State Fullerton 24-3

The convincing victory comes one week after the team suffered two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches. Last weekend, The Beach suffered disappointing losses to the University of Pacific 10-9 and to Stanford 14-6.

Freshman 2-meter man Chris Segesman scored three goals in the first period, helping The Beach build a 5-0 lead. The Beach would eventually lead 16-0, with 5:02 remaining in the third period.

Eleven players scored for The Beach, and seven of them scored at least two goals.

The leading scorer for The Beach was freshman driver Tyler Wawrzynski, who ended the game with five goals. Segesman finished the game with four goals, while sophomore driver Jonathan Anderson added three.

Senior driver Eric Ploessel, junior driver Adam Collins, sophomore driver Justin Matsuno and freshman driver Justin Jewell scored two goals each.

Scoring one goal each were senior 2-meter man Jeff Coyler, senior driver Matt Tilton, junior 2-meter man Corey Dolley and sophomore driver David Martindale.

Senior goalie Adam Carter had an easy afternoon and finished the game with only one save. His replacement, freshman goalie Brett Adolph, saw plenty of action late in the game and finished with nine saves.

The victory improved the team's record to 4-5, but they remain 0-2 in MPSF play.

The team will return to MPSF action this weekend. It will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday to face the Gauchos at noon. Sunday at noon, The Beach will host UC Berkeley at George Allen Field.
