The request to raise the pay for student assistants on Cal State University campuses to state minimum wage was approved by the California State Student Association at the executive board meeting in San Marcos.

CSSA Vice Chairman, Alex Arteaga of CSU Dominguez Hills, said the plan has been sent to Chancellor Reed's office for implementation by the fiscal year 2000.

Under the plan, student pay is to be increased to $5.75 an hour, instead of the $5.15 federal minimum hourly wage.

Arteaga said the board also approved a resolution in support of Bond Measure 1A, which will provide $2.5 billion to the CSU, UC and community college systems.

Passage of the bond will provide funds to build new buildings, which is intended to result in the reduction of class sizes and to provide more course selection, Arteaga said.

"CSSA is working with campuses throughout the system to promote and increase student voter registration," he said.
