Career Day offers job opportunities

California representatives from more than 120 employers will be at Cal State Long Beach today for the 22nd annual Career Day, said Wade Hawley, director of the Career Development Center. Prospective employers will line Friendship Walk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide employment information to students.

"Many of these employers have positions nationwide," Hawley said.

The CDC has two main goals in hosting Career Day, Hawley said.

"For undergraduates it is an opportunity to see how their academic disciplines relate to actual openings within companies," Hawley said. "Also, it provides individuals that are graduating or looking for full-time employment an opportunity to actually submit their resumes."

In addition to Career Day, the CDC provides nearly 50 workshops a semester. They include interviewing techniques, resume writing and mock interview practice.

Other workshops devote time to using the World Wide Web and e-mail when doing a job search.

"We have 13 full-time employees," Hawley said. "We also have seven career counselors and 20 paid part-time student assistants."

Company brochures and literature are available to students at the CDC Career Resource Library, which is located on the second floor of Brotman Hall. Literature is available and free for enrolled CSULB students. Alumni may use the CDC resources for job searches, company information and career counseling for a fee of $75 a year.

The CDC's Website address is www.careers.csulb.edu and serves as a gateway to other sites.

These sites contain valuable career-planning tips and employment information, job search articles and tips, features on companies, and information on graduate and professional schools.
