Fresh from their first ever weekend retreat to Catalina Island, Associated Students Inc. members appointed two new commissioners at their second meeting of the year last Wednesday.
Chris Cuevas was appointed night student and safety commissioner and Henry David Gonzales was selected as arts commissioner.
A.S.I. is still seeking to fill 10 vacant commissions, including entertainment, ecology, outreach and elections.
In other news, President Christy Zamani said A.S.I.'s recent Week of Welcome was a huge success. Although the extreme heat kept many students from donning sumo-wrestling suits, it did not deter them from the flames of the barbecue.
Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson grilled burgers for hungry students. The one problem A.S.I. faced was a shortage of fuel, precisely when an onslaught of students were arriving.
Administrator Robert Perez said he was pleased with the high student turnout.
"This is the first time we had multiple events taking place at the same time," he said.
Students who frequent the University Student Union seemed to be drawn to the poolside events, while customers at The Nugget gravitated toward Upper Campus events.
Unfortunately, Thursday night's screening of "Scream" was
rained out of two possible locations, but the show did go on. A VCR set
up in The Nugget allowed students to get their dose of horror for the evening.
In order to avoid similar problems in the future, Perez said all movies
will be screened indoors from now on.
