He lied, get on with it

Clinton got caught with his hands in the cookie jar. That's old news. So what's the new news? There is none. Men cheat. Women do too. And we all lie.

Let's throw a little procrastination into the mix. Instead of putting this whole lying mess off, Clinton should have fessed up from the beginning. Remember that insidious smirk he would get when he was being pestered about smoking marijuana? "And I'll tell you what, I didn't like it." Umm, funny but we've never heard anyone ever say that. Maybe it's just because we're in college ...

But he misled us from the beginning (we know he inhaled). Then comes Gennifer, Paula and Linda ... but no one seemed to care. Everyone lies. So why has Monica's face been plastered over the media for the last seven months? We know he did it. We don't need reinforcement. Leave the man alone.

Starr says no. Starr wants to yap on and on about the President's promiscuity until Clinton becomes so sick of reading about his bedroom ways on the front page of the paper that he fesses up just to get us to shut up. In a logical, perfect world, Clinton would have made this confession the day after, maybe even the week after, saving taxpayers millions of dollars. But what person in their right mind admits to a lie when they're 100 percent convinced they're going to get away with it?

Clinton miscalculated (maybe he didn't give Starr enough points) and now he's supposed to pay the consequences. However, the public has become so uninterested by this point that we're miles away from wishing we were on his grand jury.

He told her to lie. Tell me what man who is cheating on his wife isn't going to mumble "Let's just keep this between you and me." The man is running the country; he's an intelligent man. He asked the 21-year-old to keep quiet. It's the next, logical step to take.

We're not condoning cheating, but we're not throwing buckets of judgment on the man who is in charge of national security, either. We're competent enough to figure the man cheated on his wife and lied about it. Give us space to read about more imaginative things. But, more importantly, give Clinton the space he needs to do the job we elected him for.
