Application deadline moved back

About 2,600 more people have applied to Cal State Long Beach this fall than last fall despite the application deadline being moved back two months.

Over the past two years, the number of CSULB applicants has been increasing, said Thomas Enders, assistant vice president of Enrollment Services.

Last year the deadline to apply for the fall semester was Oct. 31, Enders said. This fall the deadline is Aug. 31.

The earlier deadline was implemented to control the CSULB student population size for the fall semester, Enders said.

This population control allows the university to provide enough classes for the students, Enders said. The biggest problem has been finding enough faculty to teach the number of classes the student population demands. The number of classrooms available for classes has not been a serious problem, he said.

Also this control prevents the crowding of student services, allowing all students access to these services.

Last year about 24,100 students attended CSULB, said Donald Coan, director of Institutional Research. This year more than 27, 800 students have been accepted to the university.

Each year CSULB is funded according to the size of the student population. If the population size exceeds the amount the state plans to fund, the university does not receive state funding for the excess number of students.

Last year the university served about 800 full-time student equivalents more than the state would fund, Enders said. A full-time load for undergraduates is 12 units.

Each year the Chancellor's Office negotiates the state budget to determine how many students the California State University system will accept to the CSU universities, Enders said.

Under advisement from his Cabinet, the CSULB president decides each semester whether to change the deadline for applying to the university, Enders said.
