An adequate computer on every professor and staff person's desk who needs one is an initiative for the 1997-98 school year highlighted by Cal State Long Beach President Robert C. Maxson at Convocation Friday.
Under the direction of Mike Mahoney and Ron Lee, almost one million dollars will be spent on technology according to Maxson.
It is the goal to budget one half million dollars yearly for new technology and to freshen existing technology.
"To make this thing work, we cannot have a selfish bone in our body," Maxson said. "What may not be adequate for one professor may be perfectly okay for someone else."
Maxson also announced his plans to implement a faculty scholar endowment program this Fall.
The money allocated for this program is from a private trust left to the University to be used at the discretion of the president.
Maxson is using this money to fund the faculty endowment program which will enable faculty development in research, assist in creative activity and scholarly activity and for faculty release.
"This program will help the faculty do what they do best," Maxson said.
Only the interest from the endowment is used for funding so this will be a permanently funded program.
Under the initiative of scholarship, Maxson reinforced his commitment to the student scholars endowment and the staff development program.
"A good university is nothing more then a good collection of good student scholars, and good faculty scholars and an intelligent staff," Maxson said.
Maxson has asked Provost Anatol to administer the faculty scholar endowment.
Maxson also stressed his commitment to continue to support research and scholarships on campus.
He said the campus will continue to maintain the emphasis on good classroom teaching and continue to recognize the importance of research.
With these new initiatives, Mason reaffirmed his comittment to establishing CSULB as an urban university.
He said, refering to the President Scholars, "These young people have success written all over them."
"But, we owe it to the thousands and thousands of men and women of all ages, from all backgrounds who come to us and deserve the very best."
