Board of trustee members have asked Cal State Long Beach President Robert Maxson if he has any interest in replacing Barry Munitz as chancellor and Maxson has said, "no," a source close to the search told the Daily Forty-Niner.
During the recruitment period of the search, Maxson was approached by two separate members of the Cal State University Board of Trustees. These trustees were willing to recommend Maxson to the CSU chancellor search committee if Maxson was interested, the source said.
Maxson showed no interest in leaving his presidency at CSULB to replace Munitz as CSU chancellor.
"I have the world's best job, and I have no interest in leaving Long Beach State," Maxson said. "This is home."
Martha Fallgatter, Chair of the CSU Board of Trustees and head of the search committee said she could neither confirm nor deny that Maxson had been asked if he had interest in becoming a candidate for chancellor.
Fallgatter told Daily Forty-Niner reporter Alison Young, "The only name that will ever come out of this search will be the new chancellor's."
The search is being conducted in private by executive search firm Korn/Ferry to insure the current job security of interested parties. A public search could jeopardize a candidate's current situation Fallgatter said.
Interviews for the private search are scheduled to begin in October, and selection is slated for November.
Munitz leaves his position Jan. 5 1998 to become president and chief executive officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
