Truly a sight to behold, Saturday night's women's volleyball game at The Pyramid was an excellent example of just what this university is capable of.
The individuals in the crowd of 2,460, a record for an NCAA women's volleyball game at The Pyramid, were at the top of their lungs (and the bottom of their beers) all night long.
They crowd got the 49ers so pumped that they smothered visiting Pacific in the opening game. UOP, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, seemed to be no match for The Beach, who shut out the Tigers in the opening game and went on win the match easily.
Leading the charge, however, was not the volleyball players on the court, but the volleyball players off of it.
The Cal State Long Beach men's volleyball team -- notorious bunch that they are -- were relentless.
Blue in the face, each one of them held nothing back throughout the duration of the game. On their feet, they were, yelling, dancing and celebrating after every point.
"I loved it," said senior outside hitter Jenn Snyder. "They were awesome tonight. They really pumped us up."
Last week the sausage spikers were at a CSULB water polo game at Belmont Plaza. The victorious polo team left the tank to high-fives and rowdy ovations with repeated chants of 'LONG BEACH STATE' for minutes after the game had ended.
The same can be said about a baseball game last semester at Blair Field when the guys were all over various members of the Pepperdine club.
They sat behind the visitor's dugout and heckled all night long. The thing of it was that Blair Field did not have 2,500 people in the stands that night, more like 25 total.
Their voices carried like no others could. They were more interesting to watch than the damn game.
Basically, I figure if Pyramid officials could pack in 5,000 people like the 10 or so hooligans that were there the other night, we could be onto something.
