National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week is the kickoff for Cal State Long Beach's Accuracy Campaign which focuses on educating students about what's really going on around them.
The Accuracy Campaign is sponsored by Options, CSULB's alcohol and other drug abuse prevention program.
"We've created something called the Accuracy Campaign because one of the things we find is that students overestimate how much everyone else drinks, smokes and uses other drugs," said Shifra Teitelbaum, Options coordinator. "The Accuracy Campaign is an ongoing campaign."
Every two years for eight years, Options has conducted a random survey of 1000 CSULB students. The survey is representative of CSULBŐs student population.
"The survey is used nationwide at universities to get a sense of attitudes and behaviors about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs," Teitelbaum said.
The Accuracy Campaign is based on the statistics collected from last spring's survey.
"For the Accuracy Campaign, we pick four or five key statistics that students would find interesting and that we think students generally think wouldn't be true," Teitelbaum said.
"There isn't any dramatic shift even though sometimes in the media there seems to be big dramatic shifts," Teitelbaum said. "Maybe, it's a percentage in one direction or another."
"There are a large number of students making healthy choices [at CSULB] and often they feel pretty isolated. But, the statistics demonstrate that there are a lot more of those students out there than they actually think," Teitelbaum said.
