The juggernaut known as the Cal State Long Beach women's volleyball team won its 11th straight match Saturday night. The No. 2 49ers' most recent victim was the University of Hawaii.
The Beach downed the No. 14 Rainbow Wahaines 15-8, 15-5, 15-0 in front of 5,015 fans -- the largest crowd for 49er volleyball ever.
"The crowd was awesome," said 49er outside hitter Jenn Snyder. "It's always great to have that many people supporting you and screaming 'Long Beach State,'"
Snyder had 10 kills and 7 digs on the night.
The Rainbows came out strong in the first match, but the momentum soon shifted and the 49ers took control.
"The first game they came out strong, but we stayed disciplined and played our game," said setter Misty May.
Against the Rainbows, May recorded her second triple-double of the season and seventh of her career. She had 11 kills 32 assists and 11 digs on the night.
"I didn't do anything differently. I saw a lot more, what was going on the other side of the net," May said.
The Beach shut-out Hawaii in the third game, holding the Rainbows to a team hitting percentage of .167.
"We didn't know where the setter was going to set the ball," said University of Hawaii Head Coach Dave Shoji, "Our blockers were so confused that they couldn't put up any good blocks."
The leading Rainbow was senior Therese Crawford, she ended up with 11 kills and only 1 assist.
Setter Nikki Hubbert had 30 assists and 1 kill in her attempt to help the Rainbows.
"We just couldn't slow them down at all," Shoji added.
The 49ers finished off the visiting Mustangs of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Thursday night 15-6, 15-2, 15-7.
These two wins in addition to the loss of No. 1 Penn State to No. 7 Wisconsin puts The Beach in position to become No. 1. Polls will be released Tuesday morning.
"If we're not No. 1 by the score [of the Hawaii match] then somebody's awfully good," 49er Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.
The 49ers stay at home to face No. 6 UC Santa Barbara Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
