Two Long Beach State women's volleyball players were honored Monday afternoon for their play on and off the court.

Junior setter Misty May was named AVCA Division I National Player of the Week.

"I didnÕt know about this award," May said. "My boyfriend mentioned something about it once, but I thought it was just for the guyÕs team."

May lead The Beach to its first ever Big West Conference tournament title. For the week, she hit .465 with 126 assists, 35 digs, 25 kills and eight blocks.

She also posted her fifth triple-double of the season in the semi-final round victory against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

So far, for the season, she is averaging 12.22 assists, 3.07 digs, 2.0 kills, .41 aces and a .356 hitting percentage per game.

She guides The Beach offense that leads the country in hitting percentage with .329

Also honored Monday afternoon was sophomore outside hitter Anja Grabovac. Grabovac was named to the GTE/CoSIDA Women's Volleyball Academic All-American District VIII Team.

"I was surprised," Grabovac said, "I didn't know this existed."

In order to be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must have a least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, must be a starter or an important reserve and be in their second season at their current school.

Grabovac is maintaining a 4.00 G.P.A., majoring in business with a concentration in management information systems.

With all the practices and traveling involved in playing volleyball Grabovac studies when she can.

"It's hard," she said, "I study on the airplanes and on the vans when we travel."

Grabovac will now be on the national GTE/CoSIDA Women's Volleyball Academic All-American ballot. Winners will be announced on December 16.
