Mercersburg Academy, which provided the men's basketball team with freshman center Ian Milley, is shipping another player to Long Beach State.
Ugonna Onyekwe, a 6-foot-8 forward from Nigeria, has signed a letter of intent to play at LBSU.
Mercersburg coach Tony Tucker said of Onyekwe, "I can't imagine there being a more talented player at his size in high school this year."
Onyekwe, who has been living in England, scored a 1260 recently on the SAT.
"He is not only a very fine basketball player," LBSU coach Wayne Morgan said. "He's an excellent student who exemplifies the type of young man we are trying to recruit. "
Also signed to a letter Friday was Charles O'Neal, a guard from Florida Community College in Jacksonville.
Milley, who started the season in the middle for the 49ers, is lost to the team until mid-to-late December. Milley fractured the ring finger on his left hand in the LBSU opener against Florida A&M.
The Beach hosts Norfolk State today at The Pyramid. The Spartans (0-3) come off a 70-45 loss at Cal State Fullerton. Norfolk State is in its first year as a Division I program.
The 49ers will be trying to recover from a 39-point drubbing Saturday at the hands of Kansas State. The Beach scored only 17 first-half points, and shot just 38 percent from the field.
