Probable volleyball All-American Misty May will miss four to six weeks, because of a knee injury. "She'll be out until there is no pain and no swelling," said Dr. Peter Kurzweil at Southern California Center of Sports Medicine.
The injury has been diagnosed as a torn posterior cruciate ligament, according to an MRI test Monday.
Kurzweil also said that there was no permanent damage to the knee itself, and no surgery will be necessary for a complete recovery.
The 49ers' captain and setter injured her left knee in the second game against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday.
Back-row specialist now turned setter Shawnee Hayes will see much work at the setter position.
Hayes, a junior from Manhattan Beach, replaced Mays and led CSULB to a five-game win over UC Santa Barbara Saturday.
While the 49ers are unbeaten, the loss of a player like May can only have a detrimental affect.
Despite the 49ers' depth and skill, the team will miss the double-digit assists that have earned Big West Conference Player of The week honors for May on two occasions twice this season.
Also, the leadership abilities that made her captain will also be missed during the stretch run.
If all goes well, May could return to the court in time for the NCAA tournament, which begins Dec. 4.
