A lot can happen in one minute -- just ask the Cal State Long Beach men's soccer team. Hector Espinosa scored the goal that gave the 49ers a win against Pepperdine with less than one minute left of Saturday's game.
CSULB earned a 1-1 tie UC San Diego Tuesday as a result of a shot taken at the last minute of that game.
CSULB soccer beat Pepperdine 2-1. This is the second time the 49ers have beaten the Waves this season.
Pepperdine scored its only goal off a direct free kick. The shot was taken just outside the penalty box 18 minutes into the game.
David Miller scored the 49ers' first goal with an assist from Scott Loughney.
CSULB was awarded a corner kick, sending the ball to the center of the Waves' penalty box. The players bounced the ball around the box, then Loughney removed the ball from the center and passed it to Miller, who blasted a shot into the net.
With less than one minute remaining, Espinosa scored on a pass from Brian McMahon. Espinosa dribbled past his opponents for about 40 yards and put a strong shot on goal. The Pepperdine goalkeeper caught the ball, but stepped into the goal, giving Long Beach the win.
With seven minutes remaining in a scoreless game Tuesday, CSULB's Greg Read took a direct free kick from the midfield.
Oswaldo Barba trapped Read's high ball, dribbled past a few Pepperdine players, and scored.
But with one minute remaining, UC San Diego came back with the goal that tied the game. San Diego had a breakaway and scored from just inside the penalty box.
CSULB will go up to UC Riverside Wednesday to challenge the Highlanders in a 7 p.m. match.
The 49ers beat Riverside 3Ð0 in a previous match.
