Residents of Bixby Hill Gardens are tired of the trash that Cal State Long Beach students are throwing on the street near their homes.

Sheila Corry, a resident, reported that students who park on Iroquois Street right in front of their townhomes abuse the privilege of parking on this street by littering.

"They sometimes just put trash from their cars neatly into a plastic bag and throw it on the street," Corry said.

The street which faces Hill Middle School is littered with everything from paper cups, fliers, candy wrappers and empty water bottles.

Corry explained that it is a two-hour parking zone but the time limit is not often being enforced by the city of Long Beach.

"I spoke with the woman who gives out the parking citations on this street about the trash and she said that there was nothing she could do about it," she said.

Tired of seeing trash on the street, residents of the townhomes decided to do something about it. Presently they are writing a letter to their council representative to state their case about the littering.

"Everyone who lives on Iroquois will sign the letter," Corry said. "We want someone from the city to come out here and see the street."

Corry said that she is very familiar with the campus of Cal State Fullerton and does not recall seeing trash on the neighboring streets.

"It is a reflection on young adults," she said. "Why do people not think it is a necessity to keep the streets clean?"

A resident of Long Beach since February, Corry said that she will keep fighting and picking up the trash until something is done about it. She said she would also like for the students who park on Iroquois to be good neighbors.

"I would like them to consider that people live here," she said. "Would they throw trash in front of their own homes?"

The whole week up until Friday are the worst days, Corry said.

"The street sweeper comes on Fridays and then the streets are clean throughout the weekends," she said. "Come Monday it's back to the same thing."

The Communications service of the Long Beach Parking and Citation Payments Department who handle complaints about parking, could not be reached for comment.
