Jing Chen, Cal State Long Beach's No. 1 tennis player, took the singles crown last weekend at the second Cal State Fullerton Tennis Championship, defeating University of North Texas player Claudia Aguilar 6-4, 6-0 in the final singles match.
In the final doubles match, Chen and her partner, No. 2 player Amanda Parson, knocked off Scuffs Denise Wilson and Aimee Medlin in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
"They performed as expected. Team-wise, they are strong as a doubles team," CSULB Coach Jamie Jones said. "They really have a positive future as tennis players."
In the quarterfinal round, Chen and Parson played against each other with Chen overwhelming Parson by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
However, another Long Beach player, Dianne Asis, lost to Aguilar 7-6, 6-0 during the quarterfinals.
CSULB got off to a decent start, with eight of 14 singles players winning their first-round matches.
Chen who hails from Shanghai, China, transferred from Central Florida University.
"She really played very well because she went through the tournament without dropping a set," Jones said.
in addition to the large contingent of players from CSULB in the tournament, 17 athletes represented host Fullerton.
Aguilar was among the players from other teams that participated in the tournament. Players from UC Irvine, Cal State Northridge, Loyola Marymount and Chapman University also played in the tournament, which kicked off Thursday.
