Terry Noe of Cal State Long Beach tied for second at the Montecito Intercollegiate Invitational golf tournament at Carlton Oaks Country Club in San Diego this week.

Noe's performance was the best the 49ers could come up with in a fifth-place finish; San Diego State took first in the event, which was held on its home course.

Noe had a score of 219 for the three rounds. Kurt Cassidy of the SDSU "B" team finished first among individual players, with a 213. Although Noe didn't get past the deficit he had built on his mediocre second-round 75, on the third round he tied with Cassidy at 70 strokes. Cassidy had 70s in the second and third rounds, on his familiar turf.

Noe's second high rank for the season led 49er coach Bob Livingstone to commend the newcomer.

"His ability is higher than everyone else's," Livingstone said. "He practices a lot more. He has a lot of experiences to draw from."

The rest of the team showed an unremarkable performance; after the first round CSULB was in 10th position. With better 3rd round scores by Noe, Rhey Luna, and David Solomon CSULB managed too work its way into the top third at the tournament.

"We played pretty well today," Livingstone said. "But on the first round, we dug a hole for ourselves and couldn't catch the top three."

The next tournament is at New Mexico State, where they need to beat the host Aggies, UCLA and Washington to have a chance at qualifying for the playoffs.
