Committed to helping disabled students gain easier access to education, the Disabled Student Services on campus provides services for more than 1,000 students each semester.
Located in the University Student Union, DSS provides counseling for the psychological, physical and learning disabilities of students.
One of the programs that DSS offers is the Stephen Benson Learning Disability Program, located in ED2-172. The program was designed to serve the special needs of students with learning disabilities, according to Maria Modde, reading coordinator for DSS.
"This program is strictly for learning disabilities services where students go through a session with a counselor to figure out their programs and schedules," Modde said.
DSS can also provide and hire notetakers for students who have trouble jotting notes because of their disabilities.
Reader services are also provided for the visually impaired, and interpreters for deaf and hearing impaired students are paired with either a classroom sign language interpretation or a transcriber.
The Roger Greaves Adapted Fitness and Wellness Center for Disabled Students, located in The Pyramid, is another service that DSS offers. The program is a full-service health club that offers fitness recreation for persons with physical disabilities. Disabled students are charged $5 and the general public $15.
